What is a canted coil spring?

Viedo 1:  One canted coil spring can serve as both the mechanical force controller and the electrical conductor. It also provides tactile and audio feedback. Click to play the video.

Figure 3: Axial Spring Application

An axial iConnFlex™ canted coil spring provides constant contact in knife connectors or pressure relief valves.

Unlike conventional helical springs with circular cross-sections, canted coil springs all have oval cross-sections with different heights and widths (Figure 1 on the right). Varying the wire diameter (WD), width, height, or coil spacing changes the spring force. A specially designed canted coil spring can enable a holding/latching, sealing, or electrically conducting/EMI shielding application. A spring ring can be installed in a fitted piston or housing groove to control disengaging force, transmit electricity, energize plastic seals, provide bearing, or block RF interference. An axial spring can provide a binding force between two surfaces (Figure 3). We sell springs in welded-ring or cut-length formats.

Compressing the coil height of a canted coil spring generates a force curve with a flat region (Figure 2). This force plateau compensates for surface unevenness and dimensional variations in changing weather or vibrations, stabilizing contact resistance in electrical connection, and controlling engaging & disengaging force in mechanical plugs. Canted coil springs are widely used in automotive, aeronautical & aerospace, green energy generation, solar and wind energy storage, battery connectors, power transmission & distribution, healthcare, Laser and lighting apparatus, military, oil & gas, and transportation industries.

Canted coil springs save materials and space, reduce assembly time and system cost, and provide reliable force and contact in mechanical and electrical connectors.
